Director’s Message

“The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship.
We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.”

Pope John Paul II

On behalf of the staff of the Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment (IGEWE) at the Polytechnic University of Tirana, I would like to welcome you to our web site. On these pages, you will get a brief look of the research, teaching, and service activities taking place in our center.

IGEWE is founded in August 2011 from the union of two former Institutes: INEUM (Institute of Energy, Water and Environment) and IG (Institute of Geosciences) under the Polytechnic University of Tirana. The scientific, technical and administrative staff of IGEWE consists of 71 people. The scientific staff is also added periodically by PhD students, post-graduate students, collaborators and university professors associated to the research projects of IGEWE.

The IGEWE organizes and carries out the research based on hydrology, hydraulics, geophysics, seismology, geology, climatology,  meteorology and coastal oceanography aimed at studying the processes relating to such disciplines or affine ones and giving the basic knowledge for their applications. Our research is an interdisciplinary work with a strong connection to important resources such as energy, water, minerals and to hazards and environmental management as well.

IGEWE ensures methodical and operational management of three national observing and measuring systems: meteorological, hydrological and seismological network. In this way, IGEWE provides meteorological, hydrological and seismological data via a database with long series observations from the stations all over the country. IGEWE offers also products and services for professional entities in order to facilitate their decision making in relevant areas.

During the years, the findings of institute are developed into a major knowledge domain due to the advance of research methodology and updating observational systems, employing new technologies for laboratorial investigations and the development of exploration methods. This is why IGEWE creates, besides others, excellent opportunities for teaching aforesaid disciplines at the Polytechnic University of Tirana.

If you have any question, we are here to listen and to serve you better.
